Tires are an essential yet delicate part of your vehicle. Keep your ride in tip-top shape by checking out these quick tips for easy tire maintenance:
Keep the tires properly inflated at all times.
Did you know that it is estimated only 19% of consumers keep their tires properly inflated? You can avoid under- or over-inflation by getting in the habit of checking the tire pressure with a tire gauge while at a gas station. The proper PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) can be found in your owner’s manual or on the placard in the driver’s doorjamb.
Don’t let the tires overheat.
Overheating is a serious problem with tires. The tires on your car can start to overheat if they are under-inflated, if you are pushing them to extreme speeds, or if you are carrying a heavy load in your vehicle. Just be aware of these potentially hazardous factors, especially in driving situations where these issues may combine and cause some problems.
Keep an eye on the tires’ wear levels.
Overly worn tires can be incredibly dangerous. Luckily, there are two foolproof ways to keep track of your tires’ wear levels: looking for the wear bar and administering the Penny Test.
All tires have a small bar running horizontally underneath the tread. As you drive and your tires become more worn, the wear bar slowly becomes more visible. Once the wear bar is fully visible, it indicates that it is time for a new set of tires.
The Penny Test is another way to check the tires’ wear level. Take a penny and insert it head-first between the tread on a tire. If you can’t see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tires are still fine. However, if Old Abe’s hair is visible, you might want to think about getting new tires in the near future.
Have a spare ready and learn how to change a tire.
Nothing is worse than being stranded with a flat. Make sure you have an appropriate spare tire, often called a “donut,” on hand in your trunk or storage space. If you can, take time to teach yourself how to change a tire on your own — it’s easy to learn with just a YouTube video!
